Test 51A - Faulty Parking Brake Message

NOTE: For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  . For appropriate wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS  at end of article.
  1. Check if parking brake is on. If parking brake is on, disengage parking brake. Ensure parking brake does not bind and fully releases. Perform VERIFICATION PROCEDURE VER-1. If parking brake is not on, read parking brake switch status using DRB-II. If DRB-II displays CIRCUIT OPEN, go to step 5).
  2. If DRB-II does not display CIRCUIT OPEN, disconnect parking brake switch connector. Connector is located near left side kick panel. Check connector condition, and clean or repair connector as necessary. If DRB-II displays CIRCUIT OPEN, replace parking brake switch. Perform VERIFICATION PROCEDURE VER-1.
  3. If DRB-II does not display CIRCUIT OPEN, turn ignition off. Disconnect both Body Control Module (BCM) connectors. BCM is located behind right side kick panel. Check condition of connectors, and clean or repair connectors as necessary.
  4. Using DRB-II in ohmmeter mode, check resistance of White/Black wire of parking brake switch connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in White/Black wire. Perform VERIFICATION PROCEDURE VER-1. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace BCM. Perform VERIFICATION PROCEDURE VER-1.
  5. If DRB-II displayed CIRCUIT OPEN in step 1), disconnect parking brake switch connector. Connector is located near left side kick panel. Check connector condition, and clean or repair connector as necessary. Connect jumper wire between White/Black wire of parking brake switch connector and ground.
  6. If DRB-II displays CIRCUIT CLOSED, replace parking brake switch. Perform VERIFICATION PROCEDURE VER-1. If DRB-II does not display CIRCUIT CLOSED, disconnect jumper wire. Turn ignition off. Disconnect both BCM connectors. BCM is located behind right side kick panel. Check condition of connectors, and clean or repair connectors as necessary. Perform VERIFICATION PROCEDURE VER-1.
  7. Reconnect both BCM connectors. Connect jumper wire between terminal No. 17 (White/Black wire) of BCM Red connector. If DRB-II displays CIRCUIT CLOSED, repair open White/Black wire. Perform VERIFICATION PROCEDURE VER-1. If DRB-II does not display CIRCUIT CLOSED, replace BCM. Perform VERIFICATION PROCEDURE VER-1.
