Test 68A - Fuel Gauge/Lamp Empty At All Times

NOTE: Perform SYMPTOM ID TEST 1B  - IDENTIFYING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES or TEST 67A  before proceeding with this test. For connector terminal ID, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  . For wiring schematics, see WIRING DIAGRAMS  in this article. Perform TEST VER-1 - VERIFICATION PROCEDURE  after each repair.
CAUTION: Always turn ignition off prior to disconnecting any module connector.
  1. Ensure fuel tank is not empty before proceeding. If problem exists in fuel warning lamp only, replace Body Control Module (BCM). If problem does not exist in fuel warning lamp only, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. If vehicle is flex fuel equipped, go to TEST 68B  . If vehicle is not flex fuel, turn ignition on. Using scan tool, read ignition voltage. If scan tool displays 0.0 volts, go to TEST 68C  . If scan tool does not display 0.0 volts, go to next step.
  3. Read fuel level voltage status. If scan tool displays less than 1 volt, go to TEST 68D  . If scan tool displays 1 volt or greater, turn ignition off. Access fuel pump connector. Connector is located on top of fuel tank and is accessible by removing access cover in floor of trunk. Disconnect fuel pump connector. Go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition on. Connect jumper wire between fuel pump connector terminals No. 2 (Dark Blue wire) and No. 3 (Black/Tan wire). Using scan tool, read fuel level sensor voltage. If scan tool displays less than 1 volt, replace fuel level sensor. If voltage is 1 volt or greater, disconnect jumper wire. Go to next step.
  5. Connect jumper wire between fuel pump connector terminal No. 2 (Dark Blue wire) and chassis ground. If scan tool displays less than 1 volt, repair open Dark Blue wire. If voltage is 1 volt or greater, disconnect jumper wire. Go to next step.
  6. With BCM connectors connected, connect jumper wire between BCM Gray connector terminal No. 23 (Dark Blue wire) and chassis ground. If scan tool displays less than 1 volt, repair open Dark Blue wire. If voltage is 1 volt or greater, disconnect jumper wire. Go to next step.
  7. Turn ignition off. Disconnect and inspect BCM Gray connector. Repair connector as necessary. If connector is okay, replace BCM.
