Test 16A - Low Brake Fluid

NOTE: For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  . For wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Perform TEST VER-1 after each repair.
CAUTION: Always turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting or connecting any module connector.
  1. If vehicle is equipped with anti-lock brakes, see ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM article in the BRAKES section. If vehicle is not equipped with anti-lock brakes, check brake fluid level in reservoir. If fluid level is not within specification, go to next step.
  2. Start engine. Observe EVIC panel. If EVIC panel does not display CHECK BRAKES, go to step 5). If EVIC panel displays CHECK BRAKES, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect brake fluid level switch connector. Check, clean and repair connections as needed. Start engine. Observe EVIC panel. If EVIC panel does not display CHECK BRAKES, replace brake fluid level switch. If EVIC panel displays CHECK BRAKES, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect engine node connector. Check, clean and repair connections as needed. Put DRB in ohmmeter mode. Measure resistance at engine node connector terminal No. 3 (Gray/Red wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair Gray/Red wire between engine node connector and brake fluid level sensor connector for short to ground. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace engine node.
  5. If EVIC panel does not display CHECK BRAKES in step 2), turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect brake fluid level switch connector. Check, clean and repair connections as needed. Connect jumper wire between brake fluid level switch connector terminal No. 1 (Gray/Red wire) and terminal No. 2 (Black/Light Green wire). Start engine. Observe EVIC panel. If EVIC panel displays CHECK BRAKES, replace brake fluid level switch. If EVIC panel does not display CHECK BRAKES, go to next step.
  6. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect jumper wire. Connect jumper wire between brake fluid level switch connector terminal No. 1 (Gray/Red wire) and ground. Start engine. Observe EVIC panel. If EVIC panel displays CHECK BRAKES, repair Black/Light Green wire between brake fluid level switch connector and engine node for short to ground. If EVIC panel does not display CHECK BRAKES, go to next step.
  7. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect jumper wire. Disconnect engine node connector. Using an external ohmmeter, Measure resistance of Gray/Red wire between engine node connector terminal No. 3 and brake fluid level switch connector terminal No. 1. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair open in Gray/Red wire between engine node connector and brake fluid level switch connector. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace engine node.
