Test 30A - Brake Warning Lamp & Parking Brake Switch Problems

CAUTION: Always turn ignition off prior to disconnecting or connecting any module connector.
NOTE: For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS - 3.0L article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Perform TEST VER-1 after each repair.
  1. Using scan tool, stop sequential lamp test and read park brake switch status. Ensure parking brake lever has no binding or interference. If scan tool displays PRK BRAKE OPEN, go to step 6). If scan tool does not display PRK BRAKE OPEN, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect parking brake switch connector. Check and clean connections as necessary. If connections are okay, go to next step.
  3. If scan tool displays PRK BRAKE OPEN, replace parking brake switch. If scan tool does not display PRK BRAKE OPEN, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Body Control Module (BCM) Natural connector. Check, clean and repair connections as necessary. If connections are okay, go to next step.
  5. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, check resistance of BCM Natural connector terminal No. 17 (Black/White wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair Black/White wire between BCM Natural connector and parking brake switch connector for short to ground. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace BCM.
  6. Depress parking brake. If scan tool displays PRK BRAKE CLOSED, go to TEST 30B. If scan tool does not display PRK BRAKE CLOSED, go to next step.
  7. Disconnect parking brake switch. Check and clean connections. Connect a jumper wire between parking brake switch connector (Black/White wire) and chassis ground. If scan tool displays PRK BRAKE CLOSED, replace parking brake switch. If scan tool does not display PRK BRAKE CLOSED, disconnect jumper wire and go to next step.
  8. Access BCM, located behind right kick panel. With connectors connected, connect jumper wire between BCM Natural connector terminal No. 17 (Black/White wire) and chassis ground. If scan tool displays PRK BRAKE CLOSED, repair open Black/White wire between BCM Natural connector and parking brake switch connector. If scan tool does not display PRK BRAKE CLOSED, replace BCM.
