Checking EGR System

  1. Disconnect vacuum supply hose from Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) solenoid. Connect a vacuum gauge to disconnected vacuum supply hose. Start engine and let idle. If vacuum reading is more than 10 in. Hg, go to step 3). If vacuum reading is less than 10 in. Hg, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect EGR vacuum supply hose at intake manifold. Connect a vacuum gauge to intake manifold nipple. Observe vacuum gauge at idle. If vacuum reading is more than 10 in. Hg, repair restriction or leak in vacuum hose to EGR solenoid. Perform TEST VER-2 . Perform TEST VER-2. If vacuum reading is less than 10 in. Hg, repair plugged intake manifold nipple. Perform TEST VER-2.
  3. Disconnect vacuum gauge. Reconnect vacuum supply hose to EGR solenoid. Disconnect vacuum hose from EGR valve. Connect a vacuum gauge to disconnected EGR vacuum hose.
  4. While observing vacuum gauge, unplug EGR solenoid electrical connector. Raise engine RPM slightly above idle and observe vacuum gauge. If vacuum reading is more than 3 in. Hg, go to next step. If vacuum reading is less than 3 in. Hg, replace EGR valve assembly. Perform TEST VER-2.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect exhaust backpressure hose from EGR backpressure transducer. Adjust shop air to 20 psi (1.4 kg/cm2 ). Connect shop air to EGR backpressure transducer nipple. While opening and closing throttle, listen for a tone change. If tone did not change, go to next step. If tone changed, replace EGR valve assembly. Perform TEST VER-2.
  6. Remove vacuum gauge. Cap open nipple on EGR backpressure transducer. Connect a hand vacuum pump to EGR valve nipple. Start engine. While slowly applying vacuum to EGR valve, listen for an engine speed change. If engine speed changed, go to next step. If engine speed did not change, replace EGR valve assembly. Perform TEST VER-2.
  7. Turn ignition off. Apply 10 in. Hg of vacuum and hold for 30 seconds. If vacuum held for 30 seconds, EGR system is functioning normal. Test is complete. If vacuum did not hold for 30 seconds, replace EGR valve assembly. Perform TEST VER-2 .
