Shift Cable: Neon
- Apply parking brake. Remove screw cover plugs over screws just behind cup holders on center console. Remove screws holding center console to floor bracket. These screws are located just behind the cup holders on center console.
- Open lid on center console (if equipped). Remove screw cover plugs over the screws near rear of center console if vehicle is equipped with a non-arm rest center console.
- Remove remaining screws and center console. Place shift lever in Park. Push downward on tab on shift cable collar. See Fig 1. Unsnap shift cable collar from shift cable to allow shift cable to be adjusted.
- Ensure manual control lever on transaxle is in Park and shift lever is in Park. Manual control lever is lever on transaxle on which shift cable is installed.
- Rotate tab and shift cable collar upward until shift cable collar fully seats against plastic housing in lock position. If tab and shift cable collar will not rotate to fully locked position, rotate tab and shift cable collar back to unlock position. Ensure manual control lever on transaxle is still in Park. Slightly move shift lever back and forth while rotating tab and shift cable collar upward to locked position. Ensure shift cable collar fully seats and tab is against plastic housing.
- Check that engine starts only with shift lever in Park and Neutral and detent position for Neutral and Drive are within gate areas on shift lever. If engine starts with shift lever in any other gears except Park and Neutral, or binding exists, readjust shift cable. Reinstall center console.
