Test NTC-2: Checking Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor Calibration
NOTE:
After making any repair during this testing procedure, perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST FOR NON-OBD II
.
NOTE:
Possible causes are: defective engine coolant temperature sensor or engine coolant temperature sensor not operating within specification.
- Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, observe Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor value. If engine coolant temperature is less than 180°F (82°C), go to next step. If engine coolant temperature is 180°F (82°C) or more, allow engine to cool until engine coolant temperature is 150°F (66°C). Go to next step.
- Start engine. Using scan tool, monitor ECT sensor value while operating engine until engine until engine coolant temperature is more than 180°F (82°C). If ECT sensor value increased smoothly, test is complete. If ECT sensor value does not increased smoothly, inspect engine cooling system for mechanical failures. Repair as necessary. If no problem was found, replace ECT sensor. For ECT sensor location, see Figure -Figure .
