Description & Operation: Introduction
The first step in diagnosing any driveability problem is verifying customer's complaint with a test drive under conditions the problem reportedly occurred. Ensure fluid level and condition are okay before performing test drive. Before entering self-diagnostics, perform a careful and complete visual inspection. Most transaxle control problems result from mechanical breakdowns or poor electrical connections.
NOTE:
If battery is disconnected or voltage supply to Transmission Control Module (TCM) is lost, TCM must relearn shift characteristics. It may be necessary to perform shift quality quick-learn procedure so TCM can relearn shift characteristics. See SHIFT QUALITY QUICK-LEARN PROCEDURE under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
CAUTION:
If TCM is replaced, speedometer signal MUST be calibrated for current application by performing pinion factor procedure. See PINION FACTOR PROCEDURE under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING. Failure to perform this procedure will result in faulty or no speedometer operation. TCM may also require flash update. Contact local dealer for updates through Mopar Diagnostic System (MDS).
The 42LE is an electronically controlled 4-speed transaxle. Transaxle contains hydraulically operated clutches, which are controlled by TCM. TCM receives information from various inputs and uses this information to control solenoid assembly for proper transaxle operation.
