DTC Test No. 63: Closed Loop Temperature Not Reached
NOTE:
Circuit is monitored when engine is running. DTC is set when engine coolant temperature does not exceed 60°F (15°C) after 10 minutes have elapsed since engine started. Possible causes for DTC to set are: thermostat fully open, defective Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor, defective ECT sensor connector or defective PCM.
- Drive vehicle for 10 minutes or more. Using scan tool, read Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor temperature (sensor read test No. 05). ECT sensor value should be 61°F (16°C) or more. If temperature is not as specified, go to next step. If temperature is as specified, failure is intermittent. See INTERMITTENT MALFUNCTION .
- Check thermostat operation. Thermostat should begin opening at 180°F (82°C) and be fully open at 203° (100°C). If thermostat functions properly, go to next step. If thermostat does not function properly, replace thermostat.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECT sensor harness connector. ECT sensor is located near engine coolant filler cap. See Figure. Measure resistance between terminals at ECT sensor (component side). Resistance should be 9-11 k/ohms at 77°F (25°C) and .6-.8 k/ohms at 212°F (100°C). If resistances are as specified, go to next step. If resistance are not as specified, replace ECT sensor.
- Inspect ECT sensor connector, junction connector No. 3 and Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors for damaged wires or terminals. PCM is located at left front corner of engine compartment, in front of Electronic Automatic Transmission Electronic Control Module (EATX-ECM), near relay box. Junction connector No. 3 is located under relay box in left front corner of engine compartment. See Figure. If problem does not exist, go to next step. If problem exists, repair connector(s) as necessary.
- Turn ignition off. Connect all disconnected components. Using scan tool, retrieve and record DTCs and freeze frame data. Clear DTCs. Test drive vehicle under conditions when DTC was set. If DTC returns, go to next step. If DTC does not return, test is complete.
- Check wiring between ECT sensor and PCM. If problem exists, repair wiring as necessary. If problem does not exist, replace PCM.
