Retrieving Diagnostic Trouble Codes

  1. DTCs are retrieved using a scan tool. Attempt to start engine. Crank engine for up to 10 seconds (if necessary). Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to DLC. Using scan tool manufacturer's instructions, read DTC and/or message.
  2. If DTCs are displayed, record DTCs and perform appropriate test(s). See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES & MESSAGES  table. If no DTCs are displayed, refer to one of the following:
    • For Speed Control (S/C) system problems, perform SPEED CONTROL INOPERATIVE  test under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
    • For driveability problems, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
    • For no-start problems, see appropriate BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
    • For charging system problems, see appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS.
  3. To erase DTCs after repairs, go to CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  .
