Cruise Control Systems: Description

The speed (cruise) control system is electronically controlled and vacuum operated. The electronic control is integrated into the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) located in left side of engine compartment, behind master cylinder. System consists of the following components: PCM, servo, throttle cable, speed control switches, vacuum reservoir, vehicle speed sensor, speed control relay and brake switch.

System control is located on right side of steering wheel air bag module. Multifunction switch includes ON/OFF, CANCEL, ACCEL/RES and COAST/SET. System is designed to operate at speeds greater than 35 MPH. On automatic transmission equipped vehicles, when cruise is operating, PCM and TCM communicate to avoid unnecessary shifts and to smooth shifting. System will also downshift to maintain speed on downhill grades.
