Charging System Operation

The charging system consists of the following components:

The charging system is turned on and off with ignition switch. When ignition switch is turned to ON position, battery voltage is applied to generator rotor through one of 2 field terminals to produce a magnetic field. The generator is driven by engine through a serpentine belt and pulley arrangement.

When ignition switch is turned to ON position, battery voltage is applied to generator rotor through one of two field terminals to produce a magnetic field. The generator is driven by engine through a serpentine belt and pulley arrangement. The amount of DC current produced by generator is controlled by EVR (field control) circuitry, contained within PCM. This circuitry is connected in series with rotor field terminal and ground.

All vehicles are equipped with On-Board Diagnostics (OBD). All OBD-sensed systems, including EVR (field control) circuitry, are monitored by PCM. Each monitored circuit is assigned a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). The PCM will store a DTC in electronic memory for any failure it detects. See On-Board Diagnostic System Test  .
