Panel Dimming Output Short

NOTE: After making any repairs, perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.
  1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC) located under left side of instrument panel. See Figure . Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, record and erase DTC in Body Control Module (BCM). Turn ignition off and wait 15 seconds. Turn ignition on. Turn headlights on. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. If scan tool does not display PANEL DIMMING OUTPUT SHORT, go to step  13 . If scan tool displays PANEL DIMMING OUTPUT SHORT, go to next step.
  2. Turn headlights off. Using scan tool, erase DTCs in BCM. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ashtray light connector. Turn ignition on. Turn headlights on. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. If DTC resets, reconnect ashtray light connector and go to next step. If DTC does not reset, replace ashtray light bulb and/or ashtray assembly.
  3. Using scan tool, record and erase BCM DTCs. Turn ignition off. Remove and disconnect instrument cluster connector. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition on. Turn headlights on. Recheck for DTCs. If DTC resets, reconnect instrument cluster connector and go to next step (A/T) or step  4 (M/T). If DTC does not reset, replace instrument panel.
  4. Using scan tool, record and erase BCM DTCs. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PRNDL light connector. Turn ignition on. Turn headlights on. Recheck for DTCs. If DTC resets, go to next step. If DTC does not reset, replace PRNDL light.
  5. Using scan tool, record and erase BCM DTCs. Turn ignition off. Disconnect A/C heater control panel connectors. Turn ignition on. Turn headlights on. Recheck for DTCs. If DTC resets, reconnect A/C heater control panel connectors and go to next step. If DTC does not reset, replace A/C control panel.
  6. Using scan tool, record and erase BCM DTCs. Turn ignition off. Disconnect radio connectors. Turn ignition on. Turn headlights on. Recheck for DTCs. If DTC resets, reconnect radio connectors and go to next step. If DTC does not reset, replace radio.
  7. Turn ignition off. Remove BCM from junction block and disconnect BCM connectors. See BODY CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect ashtray light connector. Measure resistance between ground and Orange/White wire at ashtray light harness connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, reconnect ashtray light connector and go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Orange/White wire.
  8. Turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument cluster connector. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 12 (Orange) wire at instrument cluster harness connector. See Figure . If resistance is 5 ohms or more, reconnect instrument cluster connector and go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Orange wire.
  9. Turn ignition off. Disconnect A/C heater control panel connectors. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 4 (Orange) wire at A/C heater control panel C1 8-pin harness connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, reconnect A/C heater control panel connector and go to next step (A/T) or go to step  11 (M/T). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Orange wire.
  10. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PRNDL light connector. Measure resistance between ground and Orange wire at PRNDL light harness connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, reconnect PRNDL light connector and go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Orange wire.
  11. Turn ignition off. Disconnect radio connectors. Measure resistance between ground and Orange/Brown wire at radio Gray 7-pin harness connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, reconnect radio connectors and go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Orange/Brown wire.
  12. At this time, BCM is assumed to be defective. Replace BCM.
  13. No problem is indicated at this time. Check for intermittent wiring harness or connector problems. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Repair wiring as necessary.
