Retrieving & Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes

Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under driver's side of instrument panel, left of steering column. Turn ignition on. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, check for voltage at DLC terminal No. 16 and ground at terminals No. 4 and 5. See Fig 1. If circuits are okay, scan tool is faulty.
Using scan tool, attempt to communicate with all modules. If communication was established with all modules, go to next step. If communication was not established with any module, perform PCI BUS COMMUNICATION FAILURE under COMMUNICATIONS under SYSTEM TESTS.
NOTE: Codes are listed by system affected, not from module retrieved. Perform appropriate test under appropriate section under SYSTEM TESTS .
Using scan tool, retrieve Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) from all modules. If any DTCs exist, perform appropriate test(s). See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION table. If no DTCs exist, repair by symptom. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION table.
