Section 22 (Electronic Control Modules (Service Information)): Communication: Description

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2005 Dodge Magnum and 2005 Chrysler 300. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

All models use the Controller Area Network (CAN) protocol for their intra-vehicle communications networks (data buses).

Compared to its predecessor, J1850, CAN architecture offers the following improvements:

  1. Eight times faster to ensure that messages reach their destinations in a timely manner (J1850 operates at 10.4 Kbs compared to 83.3 Kbs for the CAN system).
  2. Built-in error checking capabilities for increased reliability.
