SERVICE CAMPAIGN BULLETIN

Reference Number(s): M30, Date of Issue:  October 2012
DAIMLER CHRYSLER: 2012 (LD) Dodge Charger; 2012 (LX) Chrysler 300

MODELS

2012 (LD) Dodge Charger

2012 (LX) Chrysler 300

NOTE: This recall applies only to the above vehicles equipped with an 8 speed automatic transmission (sales code DFG)  .
IMPORTANT: Some of the involved vehicles may be in dealer vehicle inventory. Dealers should complete this recall service on these vehicles before retail delivery.  Dealers should also perform this recall on vehicles in for service. Involved vehicles can be determined by using the VIP inquiry process or GRS DealerCONNECT functions.

SUBJECT

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and Transmission Control Module (TCM) on about 66,530 vehicles may have been inadvertently programmed with software that may permanently set an internal temperature too high diagnostic code or not run the position valve stuck diagnostics. The internal temperature too high diagnostic fault can cause permanent Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illumination. Failure to run the position valve diagnostics can allow an improperly operating position valve to go undetected and fail to illuminate the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) as required by regulation.

REPAIR

The PCM and TCM must be reprogrammed (flashed).

PARTS INFORMATION

Due to the likelihood that the required labels are already in your parts inventory, no labels will be distributed initially. The following label may be ordered as needed.

Each vehicle requires application of the following label:

SPECIAL TOOLS

The following special tools are required to perform this repair:

SERVICE PROCEDURE

NOTE: wiTECH must be used to perform this recall. This procedure must be performed with software release level 13.01 or higher. If the reprogramming flash for the PCM or TCM is aborted or interrupted, repeat the procedure.

A. Reprogram the PCM and TCM

  1. Open the hood. Install a battery charger and verify that the charging rate provides 13.0 to 13.5 volts. Do not allow the charger to time out during the flash process. Set the battery charger timer (if so equipped) to continuous charge.
NOTE: Use an accurate stand alone voltmeter. The battery charger voltmeter may not be sufficiently accurate. Voltages outside of the specified range will cause an unsuccessful flash. If voltage reading is too high, apply an electrical load by activating the park or headlamps and/or HVAC blower motor to lower the voltage.
  2. Connect the wiTECH VCI pod to the vehicle data link connector located under the steering column.
  3. Place the ignition in the "RUN"  position.
  4. Open the wiTECH Diagnostic application.
  5. Starting at the "Select Tool"  screen, select the row/tool for the wiPOD device you are using.

If the part numbers are not the same, continue with next step.
  10. With the cursor over the desired flash file, click the small green arrow button on the right side of the screen.
  11. From the "ECU Flash"  screen follow the wiTECH screen instructions to complete the flash.
  12. Once the flash is complete click the "OK"  button on the "ECU Flash"  screen.
  13. From the "PCM View"  screen, compare the "Current ECU Flash Number"  with the "New Part Number"  listed on the "sort table".  If the "Current ECU Flash Number"  is the same as the "New Part Number"  the flash is complete. Continue with next step. If the part numbers are not the same, repeat Steps   through 12).

From the "TCM View"  screen select the "Flash"  tab, compare the "Current ECU Flash Number"  with the "New Part Number"  listed on the "sort table".  If the "Current ECU Flash Number"  is the same as the "New Part Number"  continue to Step  24. If the part numbers are not the same, continue with next step.
  17. With the cursor over the desired flash file, click the small green arrow button on the right side of the screen.

EMISSIONS RECALL M30 POSITION VALVE/INTERNAL TEMP DIAGNOSTICS

Dear: (Name)

Chrysler has determined that some 2012 model year Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger vehicles equipped with an 8 speed automatic transmission  may require reprogramming of the Powertrain Control Module and Transmission Control Module.

The problem is...  The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and Transmission Control Module (TCM) on your vehicle (VIN: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx) may have been inadvertently programmed with software that may permanently set an internal temperature too high diagnostic code or not run the position valve stuck diagnostics. The internal temperature too high diagnostic fault can cause permanent Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illumination. Failure to run the position valve diagnostics can allow an improperly operating position valve to go undetected and fail to illuminate the MIL as required by regulation.

What your dealer will do... Chrysler will repair your vehicle free of charge (parts and labor).  To do this, your dealer will reprogram your vehicle's PCM and TCM. The work will take about 1/2 hour to complete. However, additional time may be necessary depending on service schedules.

What you must do...  Simply contact your dealer  right away to schedule a service appointment.

If you need help...  If you have questions or concerns which your dealer is unable to resolve, please contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403.

California residents... The State of California requires the completion of emission recall repairs prior to vehicle registration renewal.  Your dealer will provide you with a Vehicle Emission Recall Proof of Correction Form after the recall service is performed. Be sure to save this form since the California Department of Motor Vehicles may require that you supply it as proof that the recall has been performed.

Please help us update our records by filling out the attached prepaid postcard, if any of the conditions listed on the card apply to you or your vehicle. You may also update this information on the web at CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC

If you have already experienced this condition and have paid to have it repaired, you may send your original receipts and/or other adequate proof of payment to the following address for reimbursement: Chrysler Recall Customer Assistance, P.O. Box 21-8007, Auburn Hills, MI 48321-8007, Attention: Reimbursement.

In order to ensure your full protection under the emission warranty provisions, it is recommended that you have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible. Failure to do so could legally be determined to be a lack of proper maintenance of your vehicle. Further, without this repair, your vehicle may fail a state or local emission inspection test.

We are sorry for any inconvenience but trust that you understand our interest in clean air. Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
