Engine Cooling System: Engine: Thermostat: Removal: 2.4L

CAUTION:

The Thermostat and housing is serviced as an assembly. Do not remove the thermostat from the housing, damage to the thermostat may occur.

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), disconnect the IBS connector first before disconnecting the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the engine cover.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  4. Remove the belly pan. Refer to BELLY PAN, REMOVAL .
  5. Drain the cooling system.
  6. Remove the battery and battery tray. Refer to TRAY, BATTERY, REMOVAL .
  7. Remove the three bolts that attach the Power Distribution Center (PDC) to the body and reposition the PDC.

  8. Disengage the wire harness retainer (1) from the upper radiator inlet hose at the thermostat housing.

  9. Loosen the CLIC E®  type clamp using (special tool #10288, Pliers, Hose Clamp) and remove the upper radiator inlet hose (2) from the thermostat housing.
  10. Remove the engine vacuum pump. Refer to PUMP, VACUUM, REMOVAL .

  11. Release the lock (3) holding the shift cable (4) to the shift cable bracket (1).
  12. Remove and reposition the shift cable (4) from the shift cable bracket (1).

  13. Unlock and disconnect the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor harness connector (4).
  14. Disconnect the quick-connect coupling and remove the degas hose (5) from the thermostat housing.
  15. Remove the two bolts (2) from the intake manifold upper support bracket (1).
  16. Loosen but do not remove the bracket nuts (3).
    NOTE:

    The bracket (1) can not be removed at this time. Loosening the nuts (3) will allow the bracket (1) to be repositioned so the thermostat housing can be removed.

  17. Disconnect the quick-connect coupling and remove the heater core inlet hose (1) from the thermostat housing.

  18. Remove the bolt (2) and reposition the coolant return tube loop clamp (1).

    NOTE:

    A swivel socket or ratcheting wrench may be required to remove the lower rear thermostat housing bolt (2).

  19. Remove the two remaining thermostat housing bolts (2) and remove the thermostat housing (1) from the engine.
  20. If required, remove the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor (3) from the thermostat housing (1).

  21. Remove and discard the thermostat housing gasket (1).
