Water Pump
REMOVAL
The water pump on 3.6L engines is bolted directly to the engine timing chain case cover.
- Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable from battery.WARNING:
Constant tension hose clamps are used on most cooling system hoses. When removing or installing, use only tools designed for servicing this type of clamp. Always wear safety glasses when servicing constant tension clamps.
CAUTION:A number or letter is stamped into the tongue of constant tension clamps. If replacement is necessary, use only an original equipment clamp with matching number or letter.
- Drain the cooling system. Refer to DRAINING .
- Remove the serpentine drive belt. Refer to BELT, SERPENTINE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove the right side engine mount. Refer to INSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNT, RIGHT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove the bolts and the engine mounting block from the water pump.CAUTION:
Do not pry on the water pump at the timing chain case/cover. The machined surfaces may be damaged resulting in leaks.
1 - Bolts - Remove the bolt and the idler pulley.
- Remove the lower bypass hose and the lower radiator hose.NOTE: Take notice to the M6 water pump bolts that mount directly to the timing chain cover.
1 - Lower Bypass Hose 2 - Lower Radiator Hose - Remove the bolts and the water pump.
1 - Bolts - Remove the water pump and discard seal.
INSTALLATION
The water pump on 3.6L engines is bolted directly to the engine timing chain case cover.
- Clean the gasket mating surfaces.NOTE: Take notice to the lengths of the mounting bolts. Some M6 bolts mount directly to the timing cover.
- Using a NEW
gasket, install water pump and tighten the M6, and M10 bolts finger tight.
1 - Bolts - Using the sequence shown in the illustration, tighten the bolts 1 - 9 to their proper torque:
- Tighten the M6 bolts to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Tighten the M8 bolts to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Spin water pump to be sure that pump impeller does not rub against timing cover.
- Install the lower radiator hose and the bypass hose.
1 - Lower Bypass Hose 2 - Lower Radiator Hose - Install the idler pulleys. Tighten the bolts to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
1 - Bolts 2 - Idler Pulleys - Install the engine mounting block to the water pump. Tighten the bolts To:
- Tighten the M 8 bolt to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Tighten the M10 bolt to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
1 - Bolts - Install the right engine mount. Refer to INSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNT, RIGHT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
.CAUTION:
When installing the serpentine accessory drive belt, belt must be routed correctly. If not, engine may overheat due to water pump rotating in wrong direction.
- Install the serpentine belt. Refer to BELT, SERPENTINE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Evacuate air and refill cooling system. Refer to COOLANT AIR EVACUATION .
- Connect the negative battery cable.
- Check the cooling system for leaks. Refer to COOLING SYSTEM LEAKS .
