DRIVEABILITY Test No 21 - Basic Ignition Timing Check
- Connect a tachometer and powered timing light to engine. Start and run engine until normal operating temperature is obtained. Disconnect engine coolant temperature sensor. The "CHECK ENGINE" light must come on. If basic timing is within 2 degrees of specification shown on emission label, go to next step. If basic timing is not within specificaion, adjust timing.
- Remove air cleaner if necessary. Ensure engine is at normal operating temperature. Reconnect coolant temperature sensor. The "CHECK ENGINE" light will not go out until engine is restarted. Raise engine speed to 2000 RPM. If timing is between 26-34 degrees BTDC, go to DRIVEABILITY TEST NO 22 . If ignition timing is not within minimum specification, replace SMEC for a bad logic board.
