Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)

NOTE: Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) is not adjustable. Following procedures may be used to check TPS calibration. For complete testing of TPS, see appropriate G - TESTS W/ CODES article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section.
  1. Turn ignition switch to ON position. DO NOT start engine. Measure voltage at center terminal of TPS, with throttle valve fully closed against stop. Voltage should be within specification. See THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR VOLTAGE TEST table. If voltage is not within specification, replace TPS.
  2. Slowly open throttle valve to Wide Open Throttle (WOT). TPS voltage should gradually increase to specification. If voltage does not gradually increase to specification, replace TPS.
THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR VOLTAGE TEST

Throttle Opening (1) Volts
2.5L & 3.3L Idle 0.5
WOT 4.0
3.0L (2)
Idle 0.5
WOT 3.5
3.9L, 5.2L & 5.9L
Idle Greater Than 0.2
WOT Less Than 4.8
(1) Measure voltage at throttle position sensor center terminal.
(2) Voltage specification may vary but WOT specification should be approximately 3.0 volts higher than idle specification.
