Solenoid Test

  1. Ensure battery is fully charged and terminals are clean and tight. Perform battery load test before proceeding. Raise vehicle. Visually inspect starter/starter solenoid for corrosion, loose connections or faulty wiring.
  2. Lower vehicle. Remove starter relay from connector. Connect a remote starter switch or jumper wire between battery positive post and relay connector terminal No. 87. See Fig 1 .
  3. If engine cranks, starter/starter solenoid is good. Go to appropriate RELAY TEST. If engine does not crank or solenoid chatters, check wiring and connectors from relay to starter for loose or corroded connections, particularly at starter terminals.
  4. Repeat test. If engine still does not crank properly, trouble is within starter. Repair or replace as necessary. See STARTER MOTOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
