Steering Column: Installation
CAUTION:
Bumping, jolting and hammering on steering column shaft must be avoided during all service procedures performed on steering column.
- Carefully position steering column in vehicle, laying it on the floor and seat of vehicle. See Figure . Use care so no damage is done to steering column, vehicle interior or painted surfaces.
- Connect vehicle wiring harness connectors to steering column mounted ignition switch and dimmer switch assemblies. See Figure . Connect turn signal switch wiring harness and windshield wiper wiring harness connectors into vehicle wiring harness connectors.
- Raise steering column into position in vehicle, aligning studs on end of steering column with mounting holes in dash panel. Install the 2 upper steering column to support bracket bolts into support bracket only far enough to correctly position steering column. Steering column MUST still be able to move in upper support bracket until lower steering column to dash panel nuts are tightened.
- Install and tighten the 2 steering column-to-dash panel attaching nuts first to correctly position steering column in vehicle. Torque the 2 steering column to dash panel nuts to 66 INCH lbs. (7 N.m). Torque the 2 upper steering column to support bracket bolts Figure to 22 ft. lbs. (30 N.m).
- Align machined flat on steering column shaft with retaining bolt location on intermediate steering shaft universal joint. See Fig 1 . Carefully tap intermediate steering shaft universal joint onto steering column shaft. Continue installing universal joint until retaining bolt can be installed through universal joint and flat on steering column shaft.
- Install retaining bolt. See Fig 1 . Torque retaining bolt to 30 ft. lbs. (41 N.m).
- Install steering column adapter. Refer to STEERING COLUMN ADAPTER .
- Install steering wheel. Refer to STEERING WHEEL .
- Install lower dash vent duct. Install vent duct attaching screw and torque to 20 INCH lbs. (2 N.m).
- Install lower dash panel to upper dash panel fascia assembly back in vehicle. Install the 6 screws attaching lower dash panel fascia to upper dash panel assembly. Torque the 4 lower dash panel fascia assembly attaching screws to 20 INCH lbs. (2 N.m)
- Connect battery negative cable to the battery.
- Test operation of horn and reset the clock.
