Inclinometer Setup For Caster Angle Viewing
Both front and rear caster angles on this vehicle can be read. This is accomplished by reading caster directly off front and rear knuckles through inclinometer sensors attached to DRBIII scan tool, rather than using alignment machine's sweep method. Use Switch Box (6996), Inclinometer Sensors (6989), Front Caster Angle Fixture (6915), and Rear Caster Angle Fixture (6916) which are included in 1996 Essential Viper Alignment Package. See Fig 1 ,Fig 4 and Fig 5 .
- Plug cable from Switch Box (6996), into PEP module connector on DRBIII marked "INCL". See Fig 2 . Plug power cable (supplied with DRBIII kit) into DRBIII power connector marked "VEHICLE".
- Attach 2 Inclinometer Sensors (6989), to Switch Box (6996). See Fig 1 . Only 2 inclinometers are supplied and should be used as a pair to measure either rear caster or front caster, one at a time. Attach power cable from DRBIII to vehicle data connector. Select STAND ALONE DRBIII option from Main Menu screen. Select INCLINOMETER option from Stand Alone Main Menu.
- Select READ/DISPLAY ANGLE option from Inclinometer Main Menu. This option is used to zero inclinometers before use on vehicle. The Inclinometer Sensor (6989), must be zeroed (calibrated) prior to each time it will be used to read caster angle on vehicle. This screen shows readout for left and right inclinometers.
- Press F3 to show both inclinometers. Zero inclinometers. See Fig 3 . Place both inclinometers together on a known flat, level surface, such as alignment rack, with knurled ends of fastening screws facing upward. Press F2. This zeros inclinometers in one direction. Rotate inclinometers 180 degrees in place, then press F2 again to zero both inclinometers in other direction. The inclinometers are now ready to be installed on vehicle.
- Mount inclinometers to either both Rear Caster Angle Fixtures (6916). See Fig 4 and Fig 5 or Front Caster Angle Fixtures (6915). Make sure inclinometer from left side of switch box is mounted to left fixture and inclinometer from right side of switch box is mounted to right fixture.
- Once inclinometers are mounted on caster angle fixtures, they can be mounted on either rear or front of knuckle caster angle pads as shown. See Fig 6 and Fig 7 . The caster pads are located on front edge of front steering knuckle and rear edge of rear knuckle. Be sure caster pads are thoroughly cleaned before mounting caster inclinometers on knuckles. Caster inclinometers must sit flat on caster pads to obtain accurate caster readings.
- Adjust caster using measurements viewed on DRBIII screen, and camber using measurements viewed on alignment equipment. When adjustments are complete, transfer inclinometers to other set of fixtures to measure front or rear caster which has yet to be measured.
NOTE:
It is necessary to have a DRBIII with an attached PEP module capable of reading inclinometers.
NOTE:
It may be necessary to remove ABS wheel speed sensors from knuckles in order to properly install caster angle fixtures on vehicle.
