Poor Sound Quality From One Speaker

NOTE: For connector terminal identification and wiring diagrams, see BODY CONTROL COMPUTER - INTRODUCTION article. Perform VERIFICATION TEST VER-1A  after each repair.
  1. Ensure radio is on. If speaker with poor quality is a pillar speaker, go to next step. If speaker with poor quality is not a pillar speaker, go to step  4 .
  2. Turn radio off. Disconnect poor quality pillar speaker and related lower speaker. Using external ohmmeter, measure resistance between poor quality pillar (-) terminal and lower speaker (-) terminal. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open speaker (-) circuit.
  3. Measure resistance between poor quality pillar (+) terminal and lower speaker (+) terminal. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open speaker (+) circuit.
  4. Turn radio on. Gain access to back of radio. Do not disconnect connectors. Measure voltage between ground and backprobe radio connector poor quality speaker ground circuit. See IDENTIFYING RADIO SPEAKER CIRCUITS  table. If voltage is about 5 volts, repair open speaker (-) circuit. If voltage is not about 5 volts, replace radio.
    IDENTIFYING RADIO SPEAKER CIRCUITS

  5. Measure voltage between ground and backprobe radio connector poor quality speaker (+) circuit. See IDENTIFYING RADIO SPEAKER CIRCUITS  table. If voltage is about 5 volts, repair open speaker (+) circuit. If voltage is not about 5 volts, replace radio.
  6. Turn radio on. Disconnect poor quality speaker connector terminals. Using an external voltmeter, measure voltage between ground and poor quality speaker (+) terminal. If voltage is more than 5 volts, replace poor quality speaker. If voltage is 5 volts or less, go to next step.
  7. Measure voltage between ground and poor quality speaker (-) terminal. If voltage is less than 5 volts, repair open speaker circuit. If voltage is 5 volts or more, system is functioning correctly.
