DTC P1294: Target Idle Not Reached

NOTE: Target idle is monitored when engine has been idling for more than 2.8 seconds and engine coolant temperature is more than 160°F (71°C) with transaxle in Drive. No DTCs must exist for Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor, Throttle Position (TP) sensor or vehicle speed sensor in order to properly monitor target idle. DTC may be stored in Powertrain Control Module (PCM) if engine idle speed is not within 200 RPM more than target idle or is 100 RPM less than target idle for 20 seconds. Condition must exist 2 consecutive times in a row for DTC to be stored in PCM. Possible causes are: vacuum leak, defective throttle body, throttle plate or linkage improperly positioned, defective idle air control motor, or defective connectors or wiring.
  1. If engine exhibits a start and stall condition, go to next step. If engine does not exhibit a start and stall condition, go to step  5 .
  2. Check throttle body minimum airflow. See THROTTLE BODY MINIMUM AIRFLOW under IDLE SPEED & MIXTURE in ON-VEHICLE ADJUSTMENTS - FWD VANS article. If throttle body minimum airflow idle RPM is not within specification, go to next step. If throttle body minimum airflow idle RPM is within specification, throttle body is okay. Test is complete.
  3. Remove throttle body. With throttle fully open on throttle body, clean throttle body with parts cleaner. Using soft brush or pad, ensure throttle body bore and throttle plate are clean. Dry throttle body with compressed air.
  4. Reinstall throttle body. Using scan tool, reset idle air control motor. Start engine. Recheck throttle body minimum airflow. If throttle body minimum airflow idle RPM is within specification, throttle body is okay. Test is complete. If throttle body minimum airflow idle RPM is not within specification, replace throttle body. Perform TEST VER-5A  .
  5. Start engine and allow engine to idle for 60 seconds. Using scan tool, read target idle and engine RPM. If engine RPM is within 200 RPM more than target idle or is less than 100 RPM less than target idle, go to next step. If engine RPM is not within 200 RPM more than target idle or is more than 100 RPM less than target idle, go to step  10 .
  6. Turn ignition off. Remove idle air control motor from throttle body. Reinstall connector on idle air control motor.
  7. Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool, actuate idle air control motor. Wiggle wiring harness and connectors between idle air control motor and PCM. PCM is located between driver's side front fender and power distribution center, near battery. If idle air control motor does not stop operating while wiggling wiring harness and connectors, go to next step. If idle air control motor stops operating while wiggling wiring harness and connectors, repair wiring or connectors as necessary that caused idle air control motor to stop operating. Perform TEST VER-5A  .
  8. Turn ignition off. Inspect wiring harness and connectors between idle air control motor and PCM. If no problems exist, go to next step. If any problems exist, repair wiring or connectors as necessary. Perform TEST VER-5A  .
  9. With engine off, check throttle linkage and throttle plate in throttle body for binding condition. With throttle linkage at idle position, ensure throttle plate is fully closed. If no binding condition exists and throttle plate fully closes, test is complete. If binding condition exists or throttle plate does not fully close, repair as necessary. Perform TEST VER-5A  .
  10. Start engine and allow engine to idle for 60 seconds. With engine idling, use scan tool in SYSTEM TESTS and perform IAC WIGGLE test. Engine speed should increase and decrease in accordance with display on scan tool. If engine speed operates correctly, stop IAC wiggle test, and go to next step. If engine speed does not operate correctly, check for proper idle air control motor operation. See DTC P0505: IDLE AIR CONTROL MOTOR CIRCUITS  .
  11. Check engine vacuum hoses and components for vacuum leaks. Ensure proper PCV valve is installed and PCV valve is operating correctly. If no vacuum leaks exist, correct PCV valve is used and PCV valve is operating correctly, go to next step. If vacuum leaks exist, incorrect PCV valve is used or PCV valve is not operating correctly, repair as necessary. Perform TEST VER-5A  .
  12. Turn ignition off. Remove idle air control motor from throttle body. Reinstall connector on idle air control motor.
  13. Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool, actuate idle air control motor. Wiggle wiring harness and connectors between idle air control motor and PCM. PCM is located between driver's side front fender and power distribution center, near battery. If idle air control motor does not stop operating while wiggling wiring harness and connectors, go to next step. If idle air control motor stops operating while wiggling wiring harness and connectors, repair wiring or connectors as necessary that caused idle air control motor to stop operating. Perform TEST VER-5A  .
  14. With engine off, check throttle linkage and throttle plate in throttle body for binding condition. With throttle linkage at idle position, ensure throttle plate is fully closed. If no binding condition exists and throttle plate fully closes, go to next step. If binding condition exists or throttle plate does not fully close, repair as necessary. Perform TEST VER-5A  .
  15. Inspect wiring harness and connectors between idle air control motor and PCM. If no problems exist, test is complete. If any problems exist, repair wiring or connectors as necessary. Perform TEST VER-5A  .
