DTC P0441: EVAP Purge Flow Monitor

NOTE: EVAP purge flow monitor operates when engine coolant temperature is more than 170°F (76.7°C), engine is in closed loop, engine has been idling for 2 minutes, no low fuel level condition exists, MAP sensor vacuum is less than 15.7 in. Hg and altitude is less than 8000 feet. DTC may be stored in Powertrain Control Module (PCM) if no air flow through EVAP system is detected by EVAP purge flow monitor. Possible causes are: defective or restricted EVAP system hoses or lines, defective or improperly mounted EVAP purge solenoid, or DTC does not match FREEZE FRAME DTC. EVAP purge solenoid may also be referred to as proportional purge solenoid or duty cycle EVAP purge solenoid.
  1. Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter is displayed and equal to zero, go to next step. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter is not displayed and equal to zero, go to step  6 .
  2. Turn ignition off. Inspect EVAP purge solenoid to ensure the solenoid is properly installed, as the bottom of EVAP purge solenoid is marked and must be facing downward. EVAP purge solenoid is located on firewall, near brake booster. See Fig 1 . If EVAP purge solenoid is properly installed, go to next step. If EVAP purge solenoid is not properly installed, correct as necessary. Perform TEST VER-5  .
  3. Inspect EVAP purge hose that goes from EVAP purge solenoid to EVAP canister for being disconnected, ripped or cut. EVAP canister is located inside driver's side frame rail, just in front of fuel tank. If EVAP purge hose is okay, go to next step. If EVAP purge hose is defective, repair or replace EVAP purge hose as necessary and replace EVAP purge solenoid. Perform TEST VER-5  .
  4. Inspect all vacuum hoses from engine to EVAP purge solenoid and from EVAP purge solenoid to fuel tank for restrictions and proper routing. If all vacuum hoses are okay, go to next step. If vacuum hoses are restricted or not properly routed, repair as necessary. Perform TEST VER-5  .
  5. Remove EVAP purge solenoid. Lightly tap ports on EVAP purge solenoid on a clean solid surface. If foreign material does not come out of ports on EVAP purge solenoid, test is complete. If foreign material comes out of ports on EVAP purge solenoid, clean out all lines and vacuum hoses as necessary, and replace EVAP purge solenoid and EVAP canister. Perform TEST VER-5  .
  6. Ensure ignition is on with engine off. Using scan tool, check to see if DTC matches FREEZE FRAME DTC. If DTC matches FREEZE FRAME DTC, go to next step. If DTC does not match FREEZE FRAME DTC, perform repair procedures for FREEZE FRAME DTC and then perform TEST VER-5  .
  7. Ensure ignition is on with engine off. Using scan tool, read FREEZE FRAME data and attempt to duplicate the condition that caused DTC to be set while noting DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter does not change to zero, test is complete. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter changes to zero, conditions required to set DTC exist. Operate vehicle for one specific good trip and clear DTCs from PCM. Perform TEST VER-5  .
