Test NTC-8: Checking Idle Air Control Motor

NOTE: For connector terminal ID, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  . For wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
  1. Start engine and allow engine to idle. Ensure no vacuum leaks exist before proceeding. Place scan tool in ACTUATOR TESTS mode and set idle air control motor to 1400 RPM for 10 seconds and note engine speed. Stop actuation of idle air control motor. Using scan tool in ACTUATOR TESTS mode, set idle air control motor to 900 RPM for 10 seconds and note engine speed. Stop actuation of idle air control motor. If engine speed was not 1400 RPM and 900 RPM when idle air control motor was operated, go to next step. If engine speed was 1400 RPM and 900 RPM when idle air control motor was operated, idle air control motor is operating properly. Test is complete.
  2. Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect idle air control motor connector. Idle air control motor is mounted on throttle body and contains a 4-pin connector. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors. PCM is located at passenger's side front corner of engine compartment on inner fender panel. Using ohmmeter, check resistance on each idle air control motor driver circuit between proper terminals on idle air control motor connector and PCM connector. See IDLE AIR CONTROL MOTOR DRIVER CIRCUIT IDENTIFICATION  table. If resistance is less than 5 ohms on all idle air control motor driver circuits, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more on any idle air control motor driver circuit, repair open on air control motor driver circuit. Perform TEST VER-5  .

  3. Ensure ignition off and idle air control motor connector is still disconnected. Reinstall PCM connectors. Start engine and allow engine to idle. Using 12-volt test light connected to ground, check for voltage at each idle air control motor driver circuit at idle air control motor connector for at least 10 seconds. See IDLE AIR CONTROL MOTOR DRIVER CIRCUIT IDENTIFICATION  table. Test light should flash on and off at each idle air control motor driver circuit. If light flashes on and off on all idle air control motor driver circuits, go to next step. If test light does not flash on and off on any idle air control motor driver circuit, shut engine off. Replace PCM. Perform TEST VER-5  .
  4. With engine idling, using 12-volt test light connected to battery voltage, check for voltage at each idle air control motor driver circuit at idle air control motor connector for at least 10 seconds. See IDLE AIR CONTROL MOTOR DRIVER CIRCUIT IDENTIFICATION  table. Test light should flash on and off at each idle air control motor driver circuit. If test light flashes on and off on all idle air control motor driver circuits, shut engine off. Replace idle air control motor. Perform TEST VER-5  . If test light does not flash on and off on any idle air control motor driver circuit, shut engine off. Replace PCM. Perform TEST VER-5  .
