No Communication With Engine Control Module/Powertrain Control Module

  1. Turn ignition off. Locate Engine Control Module (ECM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM). See Figure . Check appropriate ECM and PCM connectors for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. See Figure . If faulty connections are found, repair as necessary. If connections are okay, go to next step.
  2. Check for open or short to ground in Gray/Red wire between Data Link Connector (DLC) terminal No. 1, and ECM connectors C-116 terminal No. 54 (2.4L) or C-122 terminal No. 84 (3.0L), or PCM connectors C-117 (2.4L) or C-119 (3.0L) terminal No. 84. See Figure and Figure . See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If problem does not exist, go to next step. If problem exists, repair Gray/Red wire. Recheck communication.
  3. Check for open or short to ground in Red/White wire between DLC terminal No. 7, and ECM connectors C-116 terminal No. 62 (2.4L) or C-122 terminal No. 85 (3.0L), or PCM connectors C-117 (2.4L) or C-119 (3.0L) terminal No. 85. If problem does not exist, see BATTERY & IGNITION VOLTAGE CHECK under DIAGNOSTIC CIRCUIT CHECK in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If problem exists, repair Red/White wire. Recheck communication.
