Passenger Airbag: Removal

  1. Open deck lid.
  2. Remove four bolts to battery compartment cover and remove cover.
  3. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable.
  4. Wait two minutes for the airbag system reserve capacitor to discharge before beginning any airbag system or instrument panel component service.

    Follow all Warnings for airbag component service (Refer to ELECTRICAL/RESTRAINTS - WARNING) .

  5. Remove six allen screws to shifter bezel.
  6. Remove shifter shaft with knob and body.
  7. Remove floor console bezel and parking brake body.
  8. Remove eight screws and disconnect one electrical connector to center console and remove console from vehicle.
  9. Remove six screws and disconnect one electrical connector to instrument panel center bezel and remove bezel from vehicle.
  10. Using a trim stick or equivalent, gently pry up on the left sill plate.
  11. Remove one screw and two push pins to left cowl kick panel and remove panel from vehicle.
  12. Remove two screws and one electrical connector to driver knee blocker and remove blocker from vehicle.
  13. Remove two screws to upper and lower steering column shrouds.
  14. Disconnect five steering column electrical connectors.
  15. Loosen steering column pinch bolt.
  16. Remove four steering column retaining nuts and remove column from vehicle.
  17. Disconnect five left side instrument panel electrical connectors.
  18. Remove ground wire nuts at left floor tunnel.
  19. Remove one bolt and one nut to the left brace to instrument panel.
  20. Remove two retaining bolts to instrument panel at steering column opening.
  21. Using a trim stick (special tool #C-4755) or equivalent, gently pry up on left instrument panel speaker grille and remove grille from vehicle.
  22. Remove one screw to left A-pillar trim and using a trim stick or equivalent, gently pry off and remove trim from vehicle.
  23. Disconnect electrical connector at left A-piller.
  24. Using a trim stick or equivalent, gently pry up on the right sill plate and remove sill plate from vehicle.
  25. Using a trim stick or equivalent, gently pry out on right cowl kick panel and remove panel from vehicle.
  26. Reach up underneath the instrument panel and disconnect the passenger airbag electrical connector.
  27. Disconnect the three right side electrical connectors and one ground bolt.
  28. Remove the right side instrument panel retaining bolts.
  29. Using a trim stick or equivalent, gently pry up on right instrument panel speaker grille and remove grille from vehicle.
  30. Using a trim stick or equivalent, gently pry off A-pillar trim and remove trim from vehicle.
  31. Remove four screws and disconnect electrical connectors to radio and remove from vehicle.
  32. Disconnect the occupant restraint controller ground wires.
  33. Disconnect the two occupant restraint controller electrical connectors.
  34. Remove the left and right wiper arms, by removing one nut at each wiper arm pivot and remove from vehicle.
  35. Open vehicle hood.
  36. Remove five screws to right side wiper cowl screen and remove cowl screen from vehicle.
  37. Remove five screws to left side wiper cowl screen and remove cowl screen from vehicle.
  38. Remove four screws to the HVAC exterior intake plenum and remove from vehicle.
  39. Remove two bolts and one nut and ground wire at the wiper cowl.
  40. Remove ten nuts to instrument panel in engine compartment.
  41. With the help of an assistant, carefully remove instrument panel and place on bench.
  42. Remove four screws and two electrical connectors to the instrument cluster and remove from panel.
  43. Remove five screws and two electrical connectors to the instrument cluster gauge pack and remove from panel.
  44. Remove two screws and one electrical connector to remote keyless entry module and remove from panel.
  45. Remove two screws and one electrical connector to low tire pressure module and remove from panel.
  46. Remove three screws retaining glove box assembly and remove from panel.
  47. Remove five screws to right lower instrument panel and remove from panel.
  48. Remove twelve screws, two bolts, and one electrical connector to instrument panel cover/pad and remove from instrument panel reinforcement.
  49. Remove four screws to passenger airbag and remove from instrument panel reinforcement.
