Steering Gear
- If necessary, install outer tie rods onto inner tie rod threads. As outer tie rods are installed, count out same number rotations as were counted on tie rod removal. This will get toe setting somewhat close to specification before vehicle is aligned at end of this procedure. Snug tie rod jam nuts on both ends of gear. Do not tighten at this time. Tighten tie rod jam nuts to specification while performing wheel alignment at end of this procedure.
- Center steering gear mounting bosses over mounting holes in crossmember and install steering gear mounting bolts (3). Tighten mounting bolts to 190 Nm (140 ft. lbs.).
- Raise crossmember into position.
- Install the six bolts (1) securing the crossmember to the body. Tighten mounting bolts to 375 Nm (277 ft. lbs.).
- On each side of the vehicle, install the front crossmember bolts (2). Tighten bolts to 375 Nm (277 ft. lbs.).
- On the right side of the vehicle, install the bolt securing the lower splash shield to the crossmember.
- Install the rear side transmission strut mount bolt (1) 290 Nm (214 ft. lbs.).
- Position the power steering pressure and return line routing clamps on the rear of the crossmember.
- Install the pressure and return lines (3) to the steering gear. Tighten lines to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
- Install the heat shield and the four bolts (2) to the steering gear. Tighten lines to 18 Nm (13 ft. lbs.).
- On both sides of vehicle, install the lower control arms to the ball joints.
- Install a NEW nut (2) attaching lower control arm to ball joint by holding rod end stud stationary while tightening nut with a wrench. Using a crowfoot wrench on a torque wrench, tighten the nuts to 168 Nm (124 ft. lbs.).
- On both sides of vehicle, install each outer tie rod end (1) to the knuckle.
- Install a NEW nut (3) attaching outer tie rod to knuckle by holding rod end stud stationary while tightening nut with a wrench. Using a crowfoot wrench on a torque wrench, tighten the nuts to 90 Nm (66 ft. lbs.).
- At each end of stabilizer bar, install nut (2) securing link to the lower control arm. Tighten the nuts to 63 Nm (46 ft. lbs.).
- On each side of vehicle, install tire and wheel assembly. Refer to INSTALLATION .
- Lower vehicle.
- Slide intermediate shaft (1) onto steering gear shaft.
- Install pinch bolt (2) securing intermediate shaft to steering gear shaft. Tighten bolt to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
- Connect negative battery cable (1) on negative battery post.
- Install the battery access cover.
- Remove steering wheel holder.
- Fill and bleed power steering system. Refer to POWER STEERING SYSTEM BLEEDING .
- Inspect for leaks.
- Set toe to specifications Refer to WHEEL ALIGNMENT, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
