Engine Cooling Fan: Diagnosis

  1. If cooling fan is inoperative, disconnect electrical connector at coolant temperature switch (located in thermostat housing). Jumper harness connector "A" and "B" and turn ignition on. If fan runs, replace coolant temperature switch. See Fig 1.
  2. If fan does not run in step 1), check voltage at diode assembly (located in feed wire to A/C compressor clutch) and replace if defective. Check for battery voltage at terminal No. 5 with coolant temperature switch harness jumpered and ignition on. If voltage is not present, repair open in harness between ignition and terminal No. 5.
  3. Check for battery voltage at terminal No. 4 on cooling fan relay (located in relay center in engine compartment). If voltage does not exist, repair open in fusible link. Using an ohmmeter, check that continuity exists between cooling fan relay terminal No. 2 and ground. If no continuity exists, repair open in ground circuit.
  4. With coolant temperature switch harness connector jumpered and ignition on, check for battery voltage at terminal No. 1 at cooling fan relay. If voltage does not exist, replace coolant fan relay.
  5. If coolant fan is still inoperative, check electrical connection at fan. Repair electrical connection or replace fan assembly.
