Test 10A - Bus (+) & Bus (-) Shorted Together

NOTE: For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  . For wiring diagrams, see appropriate article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE:
  1. Using scan tool, indicate whether vehicle is equipped with specific module. See MODULE APPLICATIONS table. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Transmission Control Module (TCM) connector, if equipped. TCM is located on left side of engine compartment near cowl. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, replace TCM.
  2. If scan tool displays BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, turn ignition off and disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM). PCM is located between Data Link Connector (DLC) and battery, on fenderwell. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, replace PCM.
  3. If scan tool displays BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, turn ignition off and disconnect Controller Anti-Lock Brake (CAB), if equipped. CAB is located on left fenderwell of engine compartment, behind anti-lock brake pump motor. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, replace CAB.
  4. If scan tool displays BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, turn ignition off and disconnect traveler module, if equipped. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, replace traveler module.
  5. If scan tool displays BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, turn ignition off and disconnect Mechanical Instrument Cluster (MIC) or Electronic Instrument Cluster (EIC). Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, replace MIC or EIC.
  6. If scan tool displays BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, turn ignition off and disconnect Vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS) module, if equipped. VTSS module is located in back of glove box. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, replace VTSS module.
  7. If scan tool displays BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, turn ignition off and disconnect compass/mini-trip module, if equipped. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, replace compass/mini-trip module.
  8. If scan tool displays BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, turn ignition off and disconnect Infinity CD player, if equipped. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, replace CD player. If scan tool displays BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, turn ignition off and wait 2 minutes.
CAUTION: Ensure ignition is off for 2 minutes before proceeding.
  9. Disconnect Air Bag System Control Module (ABSCM). ABSCM is located under center of instrument panel. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, replace ABSCM.
  10. If scan tool displays BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, turn ignition off. Disconnect ATC head (A/C-heater control panel), if equipped. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, replace ATC head.
  11. If scan tool displays BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, turn ignition off. Disconnect Overhead Traveler Information System (OTIS) module, if equipped. OTIS is located at center of roof, above visors. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, replace OTIS.
  12. If scan tool displays BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, turn ignition off and disconnect Body Control Module (BCM) connectors, if equipped. BCM is located behind right kick panel. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, go to step 14). If scan tool displays BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, disconnect scan tool from DLC.
  13. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance between DLC terminals No. 3 (White/Black wire) and No. 4 (Violet/Brown wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short between White/Black and Violet/Brown wires. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace scan tool cable or cartridge as necessary.
  14. Replace BCM. See BUS (+) & BUS (-) CIRCUITS TERMINAL IDENTIFICATION table. Go to next step.
BUS (+) & BUS (-) CIRCUITS TERMINAL IDENTIFICATION

    Terminal No. Wire Color Function
    Instrument Panel 22-Pin Connector
    8 VIO/GRY BUS (+)
    9 VIO BUS (+)
    10 VIO/BRN BUS (+)
    11 WHT/DK BLU BUS (-)
    12 WHT/BLK BUS (-)
    13 WHT/DK GRN BUS (-)
    Engine 14-Pin Connector
    1 VIO/DK GRN BUS (+)
    2 VIO/BRN BUS (+)
    13 WHT/BLK BUS (-)
    14 WHT/DK GRN BUS (-)
  15. If resistance is less than 5 ohms between any BUS (+) and BUS(-) circuits, repair circuit shorted together. If resistance is more than 5 ohms between all circuits, replace BCM.
