Inspection Procedure 43 - Volume Airflow Sensor Circuit

NOTE: For Engine Control Module (ECM) terminal ID, See Figure . For wiring diagram, see the WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
  1. Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect connector from volume airflow sensor. Volume airflow sensor is located on passenger's side of engine compartment, near air cleaner.
  2. Turn ignition on. Using voltmeter, check voltage between ground and terminal No. 4 (Red wire) on wiring harness side of connector.
  3. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check wiring harness between volume airflow sensor and MFI relay. MFI relay is located on passenger's side of center console, just in front of emergency brake lever. See Figure . Repair wiring harness as necessary.
  4. Using voltmeter, check voltage between ground and terminal No. 3 (Blue/Yellow) on wiring harness side of connector with ignition on. Voltage should be 4.8-5.2 volts.
  5. If voltage is within specification, go to step 8). If voltage is not within specification, go to next step.
  6. Check for defective terminals or connections on connector for volume airflow sensor. If terminals or connections are defective, repair as necessary. If terminals and connections are okay, check for a trouble symptom. See the TROUBLE SYMPTOM INSPECTION  .
  7. If no trouble symptom exists, check wiring harness between ECM and volume airflow sensor. The ECM is located below instrument panel, just in front of center console. If wiring harness is defective, repair wiring harness. If wiring harness is okay, replace ECM.
  8. Using ohmmeter, check for continuity between ground and terminal No. 5 (Black wire) on wiring harness side of connector. Continuity should exist.
  9. If continuity exists, go to step 12). If no continuity exists, check for defective terminals or connections on connector for volume airflow sensor.
  10. If terminals or connections are defective, repair as necessary. If terminals and connections are okay, check for a trouble symptom. See the TROUBLE SYMPTOM INSPECTION  .
  11. If no trouble symptom exists, check wiring harness between ECM and volume airflow sensor. The ECM is located below instrument panel, just in front of center console. If wiring harness is defective, repair wiring harness. If wiring harness is okay, replace ECM.
  12. Check for defective terminals or connections on connector for volume airflow sensor. If terminals or connections are defective, repair as necessary.
  13. If terminals and connections are okay, check for a trouble symptom. See the TROUBLE SYMPTOM INSPECTION  . If no trouble symptom exists, replace volume airflow sensor.
