Tune-Up Notes: Notes
- 390" 428" 4-BBL. ENGINES COLD STALL ON AUTO. TRANS. ENGAGEMENT CORRECTION: May be caused by choke pollard binding in airhorn (washers not sliding in retainer or automatic choke not properly adjusted). To correct, spread retaining clip on washers to provide free sliding, set automatic choke at three rich, and check fast and slow idle speeds.
- 390" 2-BBL. AUTO. TRANS. CARS HESITATION OR STUMBLE ON ACCELERATION CORRECTION: If normal tune-up procedures do not correct problem, check for vacuum leaks at carburetor base, jointed surfaces, and vacuum line fittings. If problem still exists, see "Ford 2 & 4-Bbl." in Carburetor Section.
- THUNDERBIRD WITH THERMACTOR EXHAUST BACKFIRE WHEN DECELERATING CORRECTION: May be corrected by rerouting vacuum sensing line and properly connecting line to anti-backfire valve. Vacuum line may need shortening and bending to fit into valve vacuum sensing fitting.
- 390" ENGINE VIBRATION CORRECTION (Cars With Auto. Trans.): Rough engine operation or vibration not corrected by ordinary tune-up procedures may be caused by unbalanced flywheel. The 390" engine flywheel has no balance weight or part number shown on transmission side of flywheel.
- 1966 390" & 428" V8 ENGINES STALLING ON AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ENGAGEMENT: See "Ford 2 & 4-Bbl. Carburetors" and "Holley 4-Bbl. Carburetors".
- 1966 390" & 428" V8 ENGINES AIR CLEANER NOT SEATING ON CARBURETOR FLANGE CORRECTION: See "Ford 2 & 4-Bbl. Carburetors" and "Holley 4-Bbl. Carburetors" .
- 1966 289" & 352" ENGINE ROUGH IDLE CORRECTION: On cars built after Jan. 1; 1966, this condition may be caused by a defective crankcase ventilator valve. To correct, replace valve.
- 1966" FUEL, OIL & TEMPERATURE GAUGES INCORRECT READING NOTE: If the radio suppression choke is connected to the wrong terminal of the constant voltage regulator, low reading will result on all gauges.
- 1966 PREMATURE IGNITION POINT OR IGNITION COIL FAILURE: Check voltage in resistance circuit by connecting a voltmeter between ignition terminal of ignition switch and coil with all accessories and lights off. Voltage reading must be 4.5-6.6 volts. If not within specifications, replace resistance wire.
- 1966 289" 2-BBL. CARB. ENGINE (WITH THERMACTOR) STUMBLE CORRECTION: If normal procedures for correcting stumble are not effective, adjust fuel level to 3/4".
- 1966 FLICKERING OR INOPERATIVE HEADLAMP CORRECTION: This condition may be caused by the headlamp dimmer switch installed upside down. Make sure multiple connector is located on topside, and secured to switch.
