Steering Columns: Removal

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the upper-to-lower steering shaft bolt. Disengage the pot-joint from the column shaft by collapsing the intermediate shaft assembly.
  2. Remove the steering wheel. Proceed to STEERING WHEEL & COLUMN SWITCHES article in the STEERING section. Remove the steering column trim shrouds. On tilt columns, remove the upper extension shroud by squeezing it at the 6 & 12 o'clock positions.
  3. Remove the steering column cover on the instrument panel. Disconnect all electrical connections to the steering column switches. Loosen the bolts retaining the steering column the brake pedal bracket.
  4. Remove the 3 screws retaining the steering column toeplate to the dash. Remove the steering column-to-brake pedal bolts. Lower the steering column and pull it out from the vehicle.
