Brakelight Switch

  1. Brakelights should activate under a 6 lb. (3 kg) force. If brakelights do not activate, check switch for proper adjustment. If brakelights do not work after adjusting switch, check fuse and bulbs.
  2. If brakelights work okay but cruise control does not disengage when brake pedal is pressed, check for battery voltage on circuit No. 296 (Pink/Orange wire) on 1992 Taurus SHO, or circuit No. 296 (White/Purple wire) on 1991 Taurus SHO.
  3. On all models, press brake pedal causing brakelights to come on. Check for voltage on circuit No. 511 (Light Green wire). Difference between voltage readings in steps 2) and 3) should not exceed 1.5 volts.
  4. Voltage should not be present on circuit No. 511 (Light Green wire) with brakelights off. If voltage difference is greater than 1.5 volts, high resistance exists in brakelight circuit and must be corrected.
