BRAKELIGHT Switch

  1. Brakelights should come on under a maximum 6 lb. (3 kg) brake pedal force. If more force is required, replace brakelight switch. Check fuse and bulbs if brakelights do not come on.
  2. If brakelights work okay but cruise control does not disengage when brake pedal is pressed, perform following test. On Continental, Cougar, Sable, Taurus and Thunderbird, measure voltage on circuit No. 296 (Pink/Orange wire). On Escort and Tracer, measure voltage on circuit No. 160 (Black/Yellow wire) at amplifier. On Mustang, Tempo and Topaz, measure voltage on circuit No. 296 (White/Pink wire).
  3. On all models, press brake pedal to turn brakelights on. On Mustang, Tempo and Topaz, measure voltage on circuit No. 810 (Red/Light Green wire) of 6-pin amplifier connector. On Escort and Tracer, measure voltage on circuit No. 351 (Dark Green wire). On Continental, Cougar, Sable, Taurus and Thunderbird, measure voltage on circuit No. 511 (Light Green wire). Difference between voltages in steps 2) and 3) should not exceed 1.5 volts.
  4. Voltage should not exist on circuit No. 511 (Light Green wire) with brakelights off. If voltage difference is greater than 1.5 volts, high resistance exists in brakelight circuit and must be corrected.
