Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
- Unplug 6-pin connector at amplifier. On Continental, measure resistance between circuits No. 679 (Gray/Black wire) and No. 57 (Black wire). On Cougar, Sable, Taurus, Tempo, Thunderbird and Topaz, measure resistance between circuits No. 150 (Dark Green/White wire) and No. 57 (Black wire).
- On Escort and Tracer, measure resistance between circuits No. 57 (Blue wire on 1.9L; thin Green wire on 1.8L) and circuit No. 59 (White/Black wire). On Mustang, unplug VSS, located at transmission. Measure resistance between VSS terminals.
- On all models, resistance should be 200-300 ohms. Resistance near zero ohms indicates a shorted coil; high resistance indicates an open coil in sensor or open wire in harness.
- If test was performed at amplifier connector, repeat test at sensor terminals. Replace sensor if resistance is not 200-300 ohms. Repair wiring harness if sensor resistance is okay.
- If resistance is 200-300 ohms and speedometer operates properly without needle waver, sensor is probably good. If necessary, substitute a known good sensor to check operation.
