Low Oil Level Indicator

  1. Ensure engine oil level is at FULL mark on dipstick. Start engine. Warning light should come on briefly and then go out. Turn ignition off. Drain 2 quarts of oil from engine. Wait 5 minutes. Restart engine. Warning light should come on and remain on. Engine oil must be hot to ensure oil drains away from sensor.
  2. If light does not come on, inspect bulb, warning indicator fuse(s), low-oil level relay, and sensor. To test sensor, connect ohmmeter positive lead to sensor terminal and negative lead to engine ground.
  3. With sensor horizontal and submerged in oil (engine full), meter should indicate open circuit. With sensor out of oil (oil drained), resistance should be less than 1000 ohms. Engine oil must be hot to ensure oil drains away from sensor.
  4. To test relay, disconnect and ground sensor wire. Wait 5 minutes, then start engine. If indicator is not on, replace relay. Relay is located on steering column/pedals bracket and has 5-wire connector.
