Cooling Fan Does Not Run

  1. Check 15-amp ENGINE fuse in interior fuse panel. Check 40-amp (30-amp on M/T) COOLING FAN fuse in main fuse junction panel and replace any blown fuses. If fuses are okay, go to step 4). If fuses blow repeatedly, go to next step.
  2. Remove COOLING FAN fuse. Disconnect high cooling fan relay (A/T) or cooling fan relay (M/T). Measure resistance between Black/Red wire at COOLING FAN fuse socket and ground. If resistance is more than 10,000 ohms, reinstall fuse and go to next step. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or less, locate and repair short to ground in Black/Red wire.
  3. Turn ignition on. On A/T models, measure voltage of Black/White wire at low cooling fan relay connector and also at high cooling fan relay connector. On M/T models, measure voltage of Black/White wire at cooling fan relay connector. On all models, if voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, locate and repair open Black/White wire.
  4. Turn ignition on. On A/T models, disconnect high fan relay. Measure voltage of Black/Red wire at high fan relay connector. On M/T models, disconnect fan relay. Measure voltage of Black/Red wire at fan relay connector. On all models, if voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, locate and repair open Black/Red wire.
  5. On A/T models, disconnect low fan relay. On M/T models, disconnect fan relay. On all models, apply battery voltage to Black/White wire terminal on relay and ground Black/Green wire terminal on relay. Measure resistance between 2 remaining terminals. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace relay. If resistance is less than 5 ohms on A/T models, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms on M/T models, go to step 7).
  6. Disconnect high fan relay. Measure resistance between Black/Red wire terminal and Red/Black wire terminal on relay. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace relay. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, apply battery voltage to Black/White wire terminal on relay and ground Black/Green wire terminal. Measure resistance between Black/Red wire terminal and Blue wire terminal on relay. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace relay. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  7. Turn ignition off. Disconnect cooling fan motor connector. On A/T models, disconnect low fan relay connector. On M/T models, disconnect fan relay connector. On all models, measure and record resistance of Yellow wire between relay and fan motor connector. On A/T models, disconnect high fan relay connector. Measure resistance of Blue wire between high fan relay and fan motor connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, locate and repair open in Blue or Yellow wire. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  8. Turn ignition off. Disconnect cooling fan motor connector. Measure resistance between Black wire at fan connector and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open Black wire.
  9. Turn ignition off. Disconnect cooling fan connector. Apply battery voltage to Yellow wire terminal of cooling fan motor. Ground Black wire terminal of cooling fan motor. If cooling fan does not run, replace cooling fan motor. If cooling fan runs, go to next step.
    NOTE: A/T models use 2 fan switches.
  10. Disconnect cooling fan switch connector(s). Turn ignition on. Ground Black/Green wire at cooling fan switch connector(s). If cooling fan runs, go to next step. If cooling fan does not run, repair open Black/Green wire.
  11. Disconnect cooling fan switch connector. Place a thermometer in radiator neck. Run engine until coolant is at normal operating temperature. On one-terminal cooling fan switches, observe thermometer and check for continuity between ground and wire terminal. On 2-terminal cooling fan switches, observe thermometer and
