Speedometer/Odometer Inaccurate

  1. Verify connector is properly attached at speed sensor. If all connections are good, go to next step. If connections are bad, repair/replace as necessary. Retest system.
  2. Check accuracy of odometer over a measured distance. If odometer is accurate, calibration of speedometer may be off. Changing speedometer may correct inaccuracy, but changing either gear will make speedometer reading more accurate. Then, however, odometer will not be accurate. If odometer is accurate, replace speedometer and recheck speedometer for accuracy. See SPEEDOMETER/ODOMETER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If odometer is inaccurate, go to next step.
  3. Ensure proper driven gear is installed. See Ford Speedometer Gear Supplement Charts for speedometer gear applications. Refer to Ford Motor Co. Parts department for Speedometer Gear Supplement charts. If correct driven gear is installed, go to next step. If driven gear is not correct, replace with correct gear. Check for accuracy.
  4. Check for proper drive gear, axle, tires and ratio adapter. If all components are correct and speedometer/odometer reads inaccurately, replace speedometer. See SPEEDOMETER/ODOMETER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If any component is incorrect, replace incorrect component and check for accuracy.
