Windshield Washer Inoperative
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1997 Mercury Cougar and 1997 Ford Thunderbird. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Ensure reservoir is full. Operate washer switch. If washer pump is inoperative, go to next step. If washer pump operates but fluid does not squirt from nozzles, inspect nozzles and hoses for blockage. Repair or replace as necessary.
- Check for battery voltage at Black/White wire terminal of washer pump while operating washer switch. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step 4).
- Check Black wire for continuity between washer pump connector and ground. If continuity does not exist, repair Black wire. If continuity exists, replace washer pump.
- Turn ignition and wipers on. If wipers do not operate, go to step 6). If wipers operate, go to next step.
- Press and hold washer switch. Check for battery voltage at Black/White wire terminal of wiper switch connector. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step 7). If battery voltage exists, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect Integrated Control Module (ICM) 8-pin connector located at interior fuse junction panel. Disconnect washer pump harness connector. Measure resistance of Black/White wire between ICM and washer pump harness connector. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Black/White wire. If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms, repair open Black/White wire and retest system.
- Remove 30-amp WIPER fuse (No. 27). Inspect fuse. If fuse is good, go to next step. If faulty, replace fuse and retest system.
- Disconnect ICM 8-pin connector. Depress washer switch. Measure resistance between Dark Blue/White and Brown/White wire terminals of ICM 8-pin connector. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace ICM and retest system.
- Disconnect wiper/washer switch connector. Press washer switch. Measure resistance between Dark Blue/White and Brown/White wire terminals of wiper/washer switch connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace wiper/washer switch. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair Dark Blue/White wire and/or Brown/White wire as necessary. Retest system after repair.
