Test D: Oil Pressure Inaccurate

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis and 1997 Ford Crown Victoria. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Verify battery voltage at load side of fuse No. 13. See Figure . If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery volt age is not present, replace fuse and retest system.
  2. Verify battery voltage at feed side of fuse No. 13. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair wiring to fuse junction panel and retest system.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect cluster connectors. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Check voltage at cluster connector C250, terminal No. 6 (Red/Yellow wire). See Figure . If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair open Red/Yellow wire and retest system.
  4. Measure resistance between ground and cluster connector C250, terminal No. 8 (Pink/Orange wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Pink/Orange wire and retest system. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  5. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect engine oil pressure switch. Turn ignition switch to RUN position with engine off. Wait 60 seconds and observe oil pressure gauge. If gauge indicates "L" (low) or below, go to next step. If gauge does not indicate "L" (low) or below, go to step 7).
  6. Using jumper wire, connect White/Red oil pressure sensor lead to ground and observe oil pressure gauge. If gauge indicates mid-scale or slightly above, replace oil pressure sensor and retest system. If gauge does not indicate to mid-scale or above, go to next step.
  7. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check resistance of printed circuit between gauge contact clips to cluster connector C250, terminals No. 6 (Red/Yellow wire), No. 7 (White/Red wire) and No. 8 (Pink/Orange wire). See Figure . If resistance of all circuits is less than 0.2 ohm, go to next step. If resistance of all circuits is more than 0.2 ohm, replace printed circuit and retest system. See PRINTED CIRCUIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  8. Measure resistance between cluster connector C250, terminal No. 7 (White/Red wire) and oil pressure switch connector Red/White wire. If resistance is less than 0.2 ohm, go to next step. If resistance is more than 0.2 ohm, check for corrosion and/or poor harness connections. Repair/replace as necessary and retest circuit.
  9. Measure resistance between ground and cluster connector C250, terminal No. 8 (Pink/Orange wire). If resistance is less than 0.2 ohm, replace temperature gauge/oil pressure gauge assembly and retest system. If resistance is more than 0.2 ohm, repair open in Pink/Orange wire between cluster connector and ground then retest system. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
