Test E: Charge Indication Inaccurate

  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. If charging system indicator illuminates, see appropriate GENERATOR article in ELECTRICAL section. If charging system indicator is not illuminated, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position with engine off. If charging system indicator is on, go to next step. If indicator is not illuminated, go to step 4).
  3. Turn ignition switch to RUN position with engine running. If charging indicator is on, go to step 6). If charging system indicator is off, light is operating properly. Test is complete.
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect generator voltage regulator connector and ground "I" terminal (Light Green/Red wire) of harness. Turn ignition switch to RUN position with engine off. If charging system indicator illuminates, see appropriate article in ELECTRICAL section. If indicator is not illuminated, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect cluster connector C251. Measure resistance from cluster connector C251, terminal No. 9 (Light Green/Red wire) to ground. See Figure . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open Light Green/Red wire and retest system.
  6. Disconnect ground at voltage regulator connector Light Green/Red wire. Measure resistance between ground and cluster connector C251, terminal No. 9 (Light Green/Red wire). See Figure . If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short in Light Green/Red wire and retest system. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step.
  7. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Test for battery voltage from ground to cluster connector C251, terminal No. 7 (Black/White wire). See Figure . If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair open Black/White wire between cluster connector and underdash fuse panel then retest system.
  8. Remove charge indicator light bulb. Check resistance of bulb. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace instrument cluster printed circuit and retest system. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace bulb and retest system.
