Pinpoint Test B - Wipers Inoperative

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1997 Mercury Mystique and 1997 Ford Contour. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect wiper motor connector. Turn wiper switch to high speed. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 6 (White/Black wire) at wiper motor connector. See Fig 1. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step 3).
  2. Test wiper motor. See WIPER MOTOR  under COMPONENT TESTS. Replace wiper motor as necessary and retest system. If motor tests okay, check wiper linkage for binding or damage and check ground system connections. Repair or replace as necessary.
  3. Disconnect wiper switch connector. Measure resistance of White/Black wire between terminal No. 2 at wiper switch connector and terminal No. 5 at wiper motor connector. See Fig 1 and Fig 2. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in White/Black wire.
  4. Ensure wiper switch connector is disconnected. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 8 (Purple/Orange wire) at wiper switch connector. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. If battery voltage exists, replace wiper switch and retest system.
  5. Remove WIPERS circuit breaker (10-amp) from F20 position of instrument panel fuse block. Check circuit breaker continuity. If continuity exists, reinstall circuit breaker and go to next step. If continuity does not exist, replace circuit breaker and retest system.
  6. Disconnect instrument panel fuse block connector "N". Measure resistance of Purple/Orange wire between terminal No. 1 at connector "N" and terminal No. 8 at wiper switch connector. See Fig 2 and Fig 3. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Purple/Orange wire.
  7. Disconnect instrument panel fuse block connector "N" (if necessary). Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 1 (Purple/Orange wire) at instrument panel fuse block connector "N". See Fig 3. If battery voltage exists, replace wiper switch and retest system. If battery voltage does not exist, replace fuse block.
