Test A: No Communication With Generic Electronic Module (Gem)
NOTE:
Manufacturer does not provide socket connector C201 illustration where (GEM) attaches to instrument panel fuse block.
- Remove fuses No. 23 (5-amp), No. 20 (5-amp), No. 12 (5-amp) and No. 8 (5-amp) from instrument panel fuse block. If all fuses are okay, go to next step. If any fuse is not okay, repair power distribution circuit. See appropriate wiring diagram in POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
- Disconnect (GEM) harness connector C236. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 14 (Red/Yellow wire) at GEM harness connector C236. See Fig 1 . If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Red/Yellow wire between terminal No. 14 at GEM harness connector C236 and terminal No. 4 at instrument panel fuse block harness connector C235.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect GEM module from instrument panel fuse block, leaving all other GEM harness connectors connected. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between terminal No. 5 and terminal No. 10 at instrument panel GEM socket C201. Battery voltage should exist. Measure voltage at terminal No. 14 at instrument panel GEM socket C201 while ignition switch is in START position. Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, replace instrument panel fuse block.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect GEM harness connector C248. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 14 (Black wire) and terminal No. 25 at GEM harness connector C248. See Fig 2 . If both resistance readings are 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If either resistance reading is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Black wire between terminal No. 14 or terminal No. 25 and ground G201 (located at left hand kick panel). Splice S236 (located near G201), connects terminal No. 14 and terminal No. 22 and then to ground G201.
- Disconnect GEM harness connector C223. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 12 (Black/White wire) at GEM harness connector C223. See Fig 3 . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Black/White wire between terminal No. 12 at GEM harness connector C223 and ground G104 (located at left front fender near air filter).
- Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 22 (Black/Light Green wire) at GEM harness connector C223. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair module communications problem. See appropriate MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK article. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Black/Light Green wire between terminal No. 22 at GEM harness connector C223, splice S120 (located at left front corner at headlight) and ground G101 (located at left front fender near battery).
