Removal & Installation: CLOCKSPRING: Removal

  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS  . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Remove driver-side air bag module. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE  .
  2. Place front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Remove steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL  . Unscrew tilt wheel handle and shank, if equipped. Remove 3 screws and lower steering column shroud. Turn ignition switch to RUN position.
  3. Using small drift, push upward on ignition switch lock cylinder release tab while pulling outward on ignition switch lock cylinder and remove lock cylinder. See Fig 1 . Position upper steering column shroud up enough to access clockspring retaining clips. Remove passive anti-theft system transmitter retaining screw and position transmitter out of way. Remove key-in-ignition warning indicator switch from lock cylinder housing.
  4. Remove 2 clockspring wire connectors from wire connector bracket and disconnect connectors. Remove wire harness from 2 holders. Release lower clockspring retaining clip. Release remaining 2 clockspring retaining clips and remove clockspring. See Fig 2 .
