Component Replacement Disabling Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Lincoln Navigator and 2002 Ford Expedition. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

This procedure should only be used when replacing air bag system components.

  1. Record pre-set radio frequencies for reprogramming, if equipped. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least one minute for back-up power supply to deplete stored energy.
  2. Remove central junction box cover, located on lower left instrument panel. Remove parking brake release lever retaining bolts and disconnect ever. Remove hood release lever retaining bolts and disconnect lever. Remove lower instrument panel steering column cover bolts and cover.
  3. Push in on retaining tab and disconnect clockspring electrical connector, located at base of steering column. Install Air Bag Simulator (418-F088/105-R0012) to harness side of clockspring electrical connector. See AIR BAG SIMULATOR  . Remove instrument panel relay cover, located on top right of instrument panel. Disconnect passenger-side air bag module connector. Connect Air Bag Simulator (418-F088/105-R0012) to passenger-side air bag vehicle harness connector (in place of air bag).
  4. Connect negative battery cable. Move and tilt front seats to highest and most forward position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least one minute for back-up power supply to deplete stored energy.
  5. CAUTION: Removing side curtain air bag bridge resistor can cause low resistance fault. AIR BAG warning light illumination and erroneous Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will result. Some models are not equipped with side curtain air bags. Side curtain air bag bridge resistors are installed in place of side curtain air bags on these models. Do not remove side curtain air bag bridge resistors unless directed.
  6. On models equipped with side air bags, push in tab on right side air bag module connector and disconnect connector. Install Air Bag Simulator (418-133/40-009) on harness side of side air bag module connector. Repeat procedure for left side air bag module.
  7. On all models, remove right front and rear door scuff plates. Release tab and open right seat belt guide cover. Remove seat belt guide anchor nut. Remove weatherstrip from right B-pillar. Remove right B-pillar assist handle caps, screws and handle. Remove right B-pillar trim panel.
  8. Push in on release tab and disconnect right seat belt pretensioner electrical connector. Install Air Bag Simulator (418-133/40-009) on harness side of pretensioner electrical connector. Repeat procedure for left seat belt pretensioner.
  9. Connect negative battery cable. With air bag simulators installed at all deployable air bag system devices, perform system operation check. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  . Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least one minute for back-up power supply to deplete stored energy.
