Removal And Installation: Clockspring: Removal

WARNING: Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) vehicle and when handling an air bag module. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury, do not use any memory saver devices.
NOTE: The air bag warning lamp illuminates when the RCM fuse is removed and the ignition switch is ON. This is normal operation and does not indicate a supplemental restraint system (SRS) fault.
NOTE: The SRS must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.
NOTE: Repair is made by installing a new part only. If the new part does not correct the condition, install the original part and carry out the diagnostic procedure again.
  1. Depower the system. For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING .
  2. Make sure the road wheels are in the straight-ahead position.
  3. Remove the driver air bag module. For additional information, Refer to DRIVER AIR BAG MODULE .
  4. Remove the steering wheel. For additional information, refer to STEERING COLUMN .
  5. Remove the 2 steering column opening cover screws.
  6. Remove the steering column opening cover.
    7. CAUTION: Do not use a prying device to detach the shift lever boot or damage to the steering column shrouds can result.

  7. Detach the gear selector boot from the shrouds.
  8. Remove the 3 lower steering column shroud screws.
  9. Remove the lower steering column shroud.
  10. Remove the upper steering column shroud.
    1. Lift where shown to release the retaining clips, and rotate the upper steering column trim panel out of the instrument cluster finish panel.
    2. Remove the upper steering column shroud hard shell.

  11. If installing the same clockspring, apply 2 strips of masking tape across the clockspring to prevent accidental rotation when the clockspring is removed.
  12. Remove the multi-function switch screw.
  13. While releasing the retaining tab at the top of the multi-function switch, slide the multi-function switch up and out of the way.
  14. Remove the 2 clockspring screws.
    15. NOTE: If the clockspring is to be reinstalled, do not allow the clockspring to turn from its removal position.
  15. Disconnect the clockspring electrical connectors and remove the clockspring.
  16. Inspect the clockspring mounting bracket for damage and remove as necessary.
    • Remove the 3 clockspring mounting bracket screws and discard the clockspring mounting bracket if damaged.
