Test B: Wipers Stay On Continuously

  1. Using NGS tester, retrieve continuous DTCs stored in GEM. Clear continuous DTCs. Perform ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and note all DTCs. If no DTCs exist, go to next step. If DTCs exist, see TEST "B" DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX  table.

    (1) Replace GEM, clear DTCs and retest system.
  2. Using NGS tester, observe PID WPMODE while turning wiper switch through all positions. If PID values do not agree with switch positions, go to next step. If PID values agree with switch positions, go to step  5.
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect multifunction switch C202b 7-pin harness connector. Check wiper switch portion of multifunction switch. See WIPER SWITCH  under COMPONENT TESTS. If multifunction switch is okay, go to next step. If multifunction switch is defective, replace defective multifunction switch. See MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and retest system.
  4. Disconnect GEM 26-pin harness connector C201a. Measure resistance between ground and multifunction switch harness connector C202b terminals No. 6 (Light Blue/Orange wire) and No. 1 (Pink/Yellow wire). See Figure. If resistance at either terminal is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short(s) to ground between multifunction switch and GEM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If resistance at either terminal is more than 10 k/ohms, replace GEM. See GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and retest system.
  5. Using NGS tester, observe PID WPRUN while triggering active command mode WIPER RLY. If WPRUN PID agrees with command mode, go to step  8. If WPRUN PID does not agree with command mode, go to next step.
  6. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove wiper run/park relay. Wiper run/park relay is located in battery junction box. Check run/park relay. See RELAYS  under COMPONENT TESTS. If relay is okay, go to next step. If relay is defective, replace defective relay. Clear DTCs, and retest system.
  7. Disconnect GEM 26-pin harness connector C201a. GEM is located on back side of central junction box. Measure resistance between ground and wiper run/park relay socket terminal No. 2 (Yellow/White wire). See Figure. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace GEM. See GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE . If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Yellow/White wire between GEM and wiper run/park relay. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Clear DTCs and retest system.
  8. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Turn on windshield wipers. Remove wiper run/park relay. If wipers continue to operate, reconnect relay and go to next step. If wipers stop operating, go to step  10.
  9. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect wiper motor harness connector C125 and wiper high/low relay. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and high/low relay socket terminals No. 87a (White wire) and No. 87 (Dark Blue/Orange wire). See Figure. If any voltage exists, repair short to voltage in appropriate wire(s) between high/low relay and wiper motor. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Clear DTCs and retest system. If voltage does not exist, replace wiper motor. See WIPER MOTOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and retest system.
  10. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect wiper motor harness connector C125. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and wiper run/park relay socket terminal No. 4 (Light Blue wire). See Figure. If voltage exists, repair short to voltage in Light Blue wire between wiper run/park relay and wiper motor. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If voltage does not exist, replace wiper motor. See WIPER MOTOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and retest system.
